Lot Essay

The authenticity of the present work has been kindly confirmed by Dr Marian Bisanz-Prakken in a letter dated 30.04.01, stating that it will be included in the forthcoming supplement to the catalogue raisonné of Klimt drawings.

Executed in 1912-13 when drawing occupied most of Gustave Klimt's time, Liegende relates to Klimt's painting Die Jungfrau (The Virgin') of the same period. It displays the artist's spontaneity of execution and his fixation with the female figure, in this case recording one of his preferred images, a recumbent woman.
