Lot Essay

The original Rainbow was made from late 1972 until 1992. From those twenty years, only four or five sets of the characters are known to still exist. They were obviously worn out over the many years of pranking and custard pie throwing, as this set show signs of wear.

Bungle bear, George, a pink hippopotamus and Zippy, an unidentified creature have since become icons of this era, along with Geoffrey Hayes and all-singing and dancing trio Rod, Jane and Freddy. This programme is a key memory for any child of the last 30 years.
