JAMES STEWART CLOWN MAKE-UP PAINTING FROM "THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH"
Paramount, 1952
An oil on paper painting depicting James Stewart as Buttons, the clown with a past, from the Cecil B. de Mille-directed circus epic. Given to John Garo, a longtime set decorator for Paramount Studios, by an assistant make-up artist who worked on the film, this image was created for make-up design purposes during pre-production phases. Another painting showing a different clown is also included and both are signed in the lower right-hand corner Karl. They are now in fragile and somewhat brittle condition with minor paper loss and tears, but the overall images are not affected.
