Lot Essay

The Edwin Forrest was designed and built by the noted Dennison J. Lawlor. She was built and launched in 1865 at Bucks Wharf in Chelsea, Massachusetts. She was built to the order of Pilot Captain John Low. The Edwin Forrest was extremely fast and was the talk of Boston in the 1870's. She also was the winner of many races in the 4th of July regattas conducted by the City of Boston. She was named after the noted American Actor and was built to replace the Edwin Forrest #14 of New York. After being employed for many years at New York and Boston, she was sold to the Pensacola, Florida, pilots. During D.J Lawlor's career he designed and built several other noted pilot boats including the Dancing Feather, Florence, Phantom, Lillie, and Hesper.
