Lot Essay

The present work derives from the Virgin and Child by Albrecht Dürer of 1517 in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Inv. no. 136. In the catalogue of the exhibition Giovan Battista Salvi "Il Sassoferrato", Milan, 1990, a further autograph version is noted of almost identical size, formerly in the collection of Prince Nikolaus Esterházy von Galantha (Inv. no. 536), and now in the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum, Budapest, Inv. no. 475. (ibid., p. 135, no. 71). Another version, possibly the same as the present lot, is recorded in the Miles collection, Leigh Court, England.

The present lot is sold with a letter dated March 16, 1957, from Professor Federico Zeri placing it in Sassoferrato's mature period, circa 1660-70.
