The plants had not been catalogued since 1690 and Boerhaave's first task was to prepare an up-to-date catalogue both for himself and his students. Some 4000 plants are listed. This work, the second edition of 1720, and the Hermann catalogue are prime documents of the expansion of the gardens during the "Cape-era" when many new South African species were being introduced.
