PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF MICHAEL H. GLICKER The following twenty lots are culled from the collection of the Chicago based attorney, Michael H. Glicker. Mr. Glicker's interest in acquiring photographs coincided with the rising popularity of the medium as a collectible. At the time the market was still forming, exuberant with its youth and unpredictable in its direction. Today, some twenty years later, his choices seem prescient and especially well chosen. Inspired to educate himself on the issues surrounding the connoisseurship of collecting photographs from the mid to late 1970s, Mr. Glicker became familiar with several local sources where he could discover for himself why the lure of photographs was so great. Essential to his understanding of the medium and its history were the relationships he struck with dealers and with the resources of the excellent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. Most notably, Edwynn Houk, then in Chicago, and Carol Ehlers, with the Allan Frumkin Gallery, were regularly visited experts with whom he developed trust in their judgment and admiration for their knowledge. The Art Institute was a haven in which to study the qualities inherent to photography in a fresh and authoratative manner. The exhibitions and publications produced under the aegis of David Travis, the Institute's Curator of Photography, were especially informative. By examining works in the collection and studying the library, Mr. Glicker had a hands on experience to guide him in the market. Ultimately, the works Mr. Glicker purchased clearly reflect the influence of these sources.
