MARQUIS OF LORNE TOBACCO CARD
The "Marquis of Lorne" card is the first recorded tobacco insert card. The card was catalogued in the American Card catalogue by Eugene Burdick, whose collection is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where one example resides.
There are three known examples of this card - one in the British Museum, one in the Burdick Collection in the Metropolian Museum, and this third example which has been in a private collection for many years. Previous articles and literature on the card did not include this privately owned example.
The "Marquis" card has been referred to as The "Honus Wagner Card" of non-sports cards, which is misleading since the "Marquis Card" is 15 to 20 times rarer than the Wagner Card. The card is in excellent condition with two corners slightly clipped. [W/10]
