1985 LOTUS 97T FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX CAR
Chassis No. 1
Engine No. 400
Engine: V6 Renault EF15 Turbo. 1,494cc, approximately 900bhp at 12,000rpm, twin turbochargers; Suspension: double wishbones, pull rod operated inboard springs with Koni shock absorbers, front and rear.
For 1985, Team Lotus had signed on the young, rising star, Ayrton Senna to race alongside Elio de Angelis. Senna's F1 debut in the previous year with Toleman proved that he could be very competitive - even in a second tier car. Engineer Gerard Ducarouge's new Type 97T was a further development of the 1984 95T. The 1984 season proved to be promising for Team Lotus as the 95Ts were reliable and came very close to winning three races.
Senna's talent really came to light in the 97T. He took no less than seven pole positions, two second and two third place finishes and a first at Estoril. Team mate Elio de Angelis took the pole and victory at Imola, but was less consistant for the rest of the season.
Chassis No. 1 is one of only four Type 97T chassis produced. It was used primarily as a spare car throughout the season. It has recently benefitted from recent examination by Classic Team Lotus factory facility. While in their hands the car was run and a thorough report detailing the condition of the car is available for inspection.
