The artist belonged to the later 'aesthetic', phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, exhibiting at the Royal Academy 1881-93. The titles of her pictures echo Rossetti, Burne-Jones and Holman Hunt, and her characteristic red chalk studies, of which this is a fine example, seem to owe something not only to Burne-Jones and Rossetti but to E.R. Hughes, who specialised in portrait drawings in this medium. Curiously enough, her address in the early 1880s was 17 Red Lion Square, a house in which first Rossetti and W.H. Deverell and then Burne-Jones and William Morris had lodged in the 1850s
