1929 DUESENBERG MODEL J ENGINE
Serial No. J-177
Engine: eight cylinder, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, Carillo rods, single downdraft carburetor, 6,882cc/420ci, 265bhp at 4,250rpm.
When E.L. Cord announced his intention to build the greatest motor car in the world, Fred Duesenberg was in charge of the engineering and development department. His enthusiasm for machinery led him to master engineering principles and earned him the respect of the entire automotive industry. His new Model J straight eight engine had a 3.75mm bore by 4.75mm stroke, displacing 420 cubic inches and was a massive powerhouse of engineering excellence. It incorporated complex sporting twin overhead camshafts that controlled four inclined valves (two inlet, two outlet) per cylinder, timing chains instead of the noisier timing gears, five main bearings and two mercury filled cartridges to help dampen vibration. The great five bearing crankshaft was reputed to weigh 150lbs. alone! Even with a modest compression ratio of 5.2:1, the surge of power was awesome, thrusting a Phaeton for example from 10-80mph in 20 seconds in top gear and providing for a top speed of 116mph.
This engine carries serial number J-177. According to highly respected marque expert, Randy Ema, it is a correct Model J engine that was formerly number 573 and was assigned J-177 when it was restored since 573 exists elsewhere. The late Phil Renick of Rancho Sante Fe, CA was a noted Duesenberg collector and he commissioned Mr. Tony Anton to rebuild this engine to original specifications with no expense spared. It is fitted with Carillo connecting rods, fly-wheel and starter and the whole has been highly polished and detailed. We do not know when it last ran or the present state of the internals. A custom built stainless steel engine stand is provided for display purposes.
This is a major opportunity to purchase a genuine Duesenberg engine.
