Bobby Allison is one of NASCAR's greatest drivers. 84 victories on NASCAR's premier circuits known as Grand National and then Winston Cup would be enough to cement his stature. His central role in the Alabama Gang of NASCAR racers with his brother Donnie and Red Farmer would be another. It's not happenstance that his sons Davey and Clifford both were set to become leaders in the next Winston Cup generation until their careers were cut short in accidents. And his dramatic win in the 1988 Daytona 500, barely squeezing out a victory over his son Davey, Bobby's third win in NASCAR's premier event, is part of racing legend. He is ranked equal third with Darrell Waltrip behind the legendary Richard Petty in first place and David Pearson in second in modern-era NASCAR wins.
Less well known, perhaps, is Bobby Allison's adaptability. He won five early NASCAR road course races, putting him on a par with modern stars like Jeff Gordon, Ricky Rudd and Rusty Wallace, and established this record in an era when road racing was decidedly foreign to NASCAR's regulars. The 1986-1988 Stavola Brothers Racing Team Miller High Life Buick LeSabre/Regal offered here is the last road racing Winston Cup car driven by Bobby Allison
This was the only road racing car used by the Stavola Brothers team at both Riverside and Watkins Glen from 1986 until 1988 when Bobby Allison suffered a nearly-fatal crash at Pocono ending his career. This particular car was bodied as a LeSabre in the red and white Miller livery when it raced in 1986 and '87. One of the first purpose-built Winston Cup road racing cars, it remains as it was last raced at Riverside in 1988 (although cleaned and refurbished for sale/display purposes) by which time the car sported Buick Regal bodywork and that year's gold and white Miller High Life livery. The car is almost identical in appearance to the 'No. 12' 1988 Daytona winning car. It has been carefully maintained by Pat Ryan since he acquired it from Herbie Livingston's museum several years ago; both Livingston's museum and Mr. Ryan's facility are fully climate controlled. It has been occasionally started and run but has not been track tested or used in competition and consequently it remains very presentable. A previous Bill of Sale from the Stavola Brothers Racing Team accompanies the car.
Good Winston Cup cars with documented histories of being pedaled by NASCAR's legendary drivers rarely become available. Even more rare is the opportunity to acquire a NASCAR Winston Cup car that has been a road racer from inception, particularly an older model such as this. Voted NASCAR's Most Popular Driver six times, Winston Cup Champion Bobby Allison is an authentic racing legend and his Buick Regal road race car is a rare opportunity to go racing in the increasingly popular historic events for American stock cars in a winner's ride.
