LINCOLN WAS FOUNDED BY THE 'MASTER OF PRECISION' HENRY MARTYN LELAND. WHEN THE COMPANY HIT FINANCIAL TROUBLE IN 1922, LELAND SOLD OUT TO THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY. LITTLE WAS DONE TO ALTER THE ORIGINAL DESIGN THEREAFTER. ENTERING THE THIRTIES, LINCOLN HAD ONLY THE OUT DATED MODEL L CHASSIS WHICH HAD BEEN CREATED TEN YEARS PREVIOUSLY. IN 1930, DRAMATIC STYLING IMPROVEMENTS WERE MADE TO UPDATE THE LOOK, HOWEVER THE ENGINE WAS STILL THE PROVEN AND RELIABLE 385CI V-8.
IN 1931, LINCOLN ANNOUNCED THE MODEL K. THE COMPRESSION RATIO WAS RAISED TO 4.95:1 BOOSTING THE HORSEPOWER FROM 90 TO 120. THE STROMBERG DD3 DUAL DOWNDRAFT CARBURETTOR LED THE GAS MIXTURE INTO THE VASTLY IMPROVED MANIFOLD WHICH DRAMATICALLY INCREASED THE ACCELERATION POWER. A NEW RADIATOR PROVIDED A GREATER COOLING SURFACE AND THE NEW FREE-WHEELING TRANSMISSION INCREASED THE FIRST AND SECOND GEAR RATIOS.
THE 1931 MODEL K BONNET WAS FAR LONGER THAN THE MODEL L'S AND THE RADIATOR AND GRILL WERE SLIGHTLY PEAKED. THE HEADLIGHTS WERE LARGER AND MORE SPHERICAL, SITUATED ON AN ARCHED BAR WITH A FREE STANDING LINCOLN EMBLEM IN THE CENTRE. TWO CHROMED TRUMPET HORNS WERE ADDED JUST UNDER THE LIGHTS. THE NEW LINCOLNS DEFINITELY GAVE AN IMPROVED RIDE, GREATER STABILITY AND MORE POWER. LINCOLNS OF THIS PERIOD ARE WIDELY REGARDED FOR THEIR QUALITY AND UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE.
THIS HANDSOME EXAMPLE WAS IMPORTED INTO BRITAIN IN 1989 HAVING BEEN FULLY RESTORED IN THE USA TO AN EXCEPTIONAL STANDARD AND THE AMERICAN CERIFICATE OF TITLE INDICATES IT WAS RESIDING IN AUBURN INDIANA IN THE LATE 1970S. THE CURRENT OWNER PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 1990 AND KEPT THE CAR AT HIS RESIDENCE IN SWITZERLAND FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. WHILE IN SWITZERLAND SOME MECHANICAL WORK WAS CARRIED OUT AND THE WINGS WERE REPAINTED. THE CAR HAS RECENTLY RETURNED TO THE UK AND ON A RECENT TEST DRIVE PERFOMED FAULTLESSLY. THE RED PAINTWORK ON CLOSE INSPECTION HAS A LITTLE CRAZING BUT OTHERWISE THE LINCOLN APPEARS TO BE TO SHOW STANDARD. EQUIPMENT INCLUDES THE DUAL HORNS, TWIN TRIP DRIVING LAMPS, TWIN SIDE MOUNTS WITH COVERS AND MIRRORS, HOOD BAG AND HOOD FINISHED IN BEIGE WITH RED PIPING AND A REAR LUGGAGE RACK. THE FRONT PASSENGERS HAVE WINDING WINDOWS WHILE THE PASSENGERS IN THE REAR DICKEY SEAT HAVE FITTED LEG PROTECTORS. LARGE AMERICAN COLLECTOR'S CARS OF THIS TYPE ARE RARELY SEEN IN EUROPE AND THIS BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE WOULD ENHANCE ANY GREAT COLLECTION.
