A SILVER BEZALEL BIBLE COVER, the front decorated with Menorot, Stars of David, eternal lights and columns, the centre mounted with an arched window filled in with filigree work surrounding Tablets of the Law, inscribed in Hebrew and a boss pierced with a Star of David, inset with a malachite, the back decorated with entwined scrolling foliage around a shaped oval cartouche, the central medallion inscribed in Latin with the monogram R D (R. Deedes), the spine mounted with Tablets of the Law inscribed in English Holy Bible, the clasp inscribed on the reverse Jerusalem 1923, the front, spine and clasp mounted with filigree bosses inset with a malachite, signed "Bezalel" Jerusalem, containing an English Bible with a presentation inscription A gift to Mrs. Deedes from the People of Palestine and made in Jerusalem, given on her leaving their country 1923, Jerusalem, 1923

This book was presented to Mrs. Deedes, the wife of Sir William Deedes (1883-1956), a British Zionist, who was invited in 1920 by Herbert Samuel, high commissioner for Palestine, to become his chief secretary. He returned to England when his term of office ended in 1923.
