BARTOLINI, Riccardo. Odeporicon. Vienna: Hieronymus Vietor for Johann Widmann at Augsburg, 13 September 1515.

4° (209 x 151mm). Two armorial woodcuts on title within ornamental border, ornamental initials, one 3-line space left blank. 19th-century tan morocco, gilt roll-tool border, gilt spine, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (extremities very slightly scuffed). Provenance: M. Nicolle (curator of Rouen Museum, signature on front flyleaf).

Bartolini accompanied Matthaeus Lang, bishop of Gurck and coadjutor of Salzburg, to the congress convened at Vienna to regulate the marriage of Ferdinand, son of Maximilian I, to Anne, daughter of Ladislas, king of Hungary and Bohemia, and the marriage of Marie, daughter of Maximilian, to Ludwig, son of Ladislas. Because Bartolini describes travelling to Vienna, the Odeporicon is as much a record of places and customs in Germany and central Europe at the time as it is a record of the congress, the rulers attending it, and laudatory orations delivered there. Several of the verses and orations are by Johannes Dantiscus, a humanist secretary at the court of Sigsmund of Poland. BLSTC German, 66 (837.g.4); VD 16, B-569; Index Aureliensis 113.704.
