The Swallow Sidecar Company was established late in 1922 by a youthful and ambitious William Lyons with his friend William Walmsley when they began building sidecars in Bloomfield Street, Blackpool. Despite the economic stagnation of the early 1920's, the Swallow company prospered and soon the Company was forced to take much larger premises at Cocker Street. The firm was re-named the Swallow Sidecar and Coachbuilding Company, and the venture into car manufacturing began.

In early 1927 the first Austin Swallow two seater was announced, which was quickly followed by a saloon version in 1928. These saloons were famous for their flamboyant colour schemes which delightfully accentuated the pretty lines of the coachwork, and as they were reliable, inexpensive and easy to drive a good proportion of the production appealed to the ladies.

The car on offer today is an original example and is offered from a private collection, where it has resided since the late sixties. The car now requires some restoration; the paintwork requires attention and the interior leather is original and rather worn. The engine has not run for about 25 years and will also require some attention. In the tradition of Christie's September sale, this is an ideal restoration project.
