PROVENANCE:
Cecily Jane Swinford Shackleton, and thence by descent.

This extraordinary album, on Shackleton's life, presumably made up by Cecily, includes a rare print developed by Hurley on the Endurance shortly before the ship sank on 21 March 1915 (The "Endurance" caught in a pressure crack, October 1915') and carried by Shackleton through the following six months from Ocean Camp to Elephant Island, in the boat journey to South Georgia and on the march across the island to Stromness Whaling Station. This very print, titled 'The "Endurance" pushed over by the force of the ice floes' was published in a contemporary newspaper and captioned: 'This picture was brought by Sir Ernest Shackleton to the Falkland Islands and thence posted to England. The stains upon it are due to the photograph getting soaked during the 750 - miles journey in the open ship's boat...' (the newspaper cutting illustrating the picture preserved in Vol II of Elizabeth Dawson-Lambton's press cuttings of the Endurance expedition, Shackleton family collection).

The album also includes a rare print of Crean, Shackleton, Captain Thom (of the 'Instituto Pesca') and Worsley at Stromness, taken soon after their arrival (20 May 1916). Just one other photograph of the trio on arrival in Stromness is known (a print from the collection of Shackleton's grand-daughter is in the SPRI, for which see J. Piggott (ed.), Shackleton, The Antarctic and Endurance (exhibition catalogue), Dulwich, 2000, p.26) and another vintage print of this latter rare photograph is included in lot 96.

The photographs include formal and informal portraits of Shackleton from circa 1904, many unpublished, at work and at home in Scotland 1904-1905, playing golf, the man about town prior to the Nimrod expedition in 1907, sledging rehearsals in Norway, May 1907, preparing for the Endurance expedition, the visit of the Dowager Queen Alexandra, her sister the Empress Marie Feodorvna of Russia and the Princess Victoria to S.Y. Endurance, 19 July 1914, group portraits of members of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (including the Ross Sea Party) on board the Endurance, the Weddell Sea Party on board the Endurance (by Hurley), and numerous photographs of the arrival of the Yelcho and the rescued Weddell Sea Party in Punta Arenas, as well as photographs of Shackleton serving in Russia (1918-1919) and on his last expedition on the Quest in 1921.
