Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-1917: Ernest SHACKLETON (1874-1922). South, The story of Shackleton's last expedition 1914-1917. London: The Complete Press for William Heinemann, 1920. Coloured frontispiece, numerous plates, the majority after Frank Hurley or George Marston, one folding two-colour map at back, occasional illustrations. Original blue cloth, upper cover and spine blocked in silver, blind-stamped Heinemann device on lower cover (neatly rebacked, old spine laid down, neat repairs to corners, inner hinges repaired).
PROVENANCE:
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1974-1922) (lengthy presentation inscription to:); Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967, who gathered six signatures of people connected with the 'Quest' expedition on the half-title); and thence by descent to the present owners.
FIRST EDITION, FOURTH IMPRESSION, WITH VERY FINE PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION. The inscription to Dr. Macklin reads 'Given on Sept 1st 1921 on the start of our comradeship once more in the new adventure on the old trail. To Old Mac from the Boss: better late than never: why you never had your copy before the Lord Knows only: the shoe maker's child is always the worst shod: Your most intimate friends get less attention than acquaintances; so you my dear chap get my book last but you Know how I feel -- E.H. Shackleton'. The Quest sailed down the Thames on 17 September 1921, and finally left for the South on 24 September from Plymouth. At some point during the Quest's voyage Macklin collected the signatures of J.C.Bee Mason; G.V.Douglas; A.J.Kerr; James A.Cook; C.R.Carr and ?E.Eriksen.
