TWO WESTERWALD GREY STONEWARE JUGS
Mid-eighteenth century
One with a flared cylindrical neck partly glazed in manganese, pierced and moulded with a stylised flowerhead within rays applied with ornament, the sides with bands of stylised masks flanked by similar rays, the spout with a grotesque mask (slight chip to top rim, rubbing to mask and slight repair to foot, the footrim with a later metal mount), 7 7/8in. (20cm.) high; the other partly glazed in blue and manganese, applied with a roundel surrounded by hearts within a double band of flowerheads and bead ornament, the sides with bands of berries and beads flanked by radiating triangular lappets and the spout with a plumed putto mask on a lozenge, 7 1/8in.
