A VIENNA GILT-METAL MOUNTED GREEN-GROUND RECTANGULAR CASKET
Circa 1785
The top painted with a vase of garden flowers on a marble ledge within an oval gold myrtle leaf surround flanked by oval and shaped triangular gilt-edged panels of bouquets reserved on a green ground with white dots, the side panels with bouquets within double gilt line oval cartouches, the hinged cover opening to reveal a green silk-lined interior fitted with two circular rouge-pots with the floral and gilt monogram HDL in a gilt oval cartouche twice, the flat covers painted en grisaille with Cupid at various pursuits and four arched square canisters and circular covers, the sides similarly decorated with Cupid in oval medallions flanked by flowers and alternating with panels of the entwined floral and gilt monogram HDL all reserved on a green ground with white dot ornament, a silver-gilt spoon and a knife with turned handle, the interior to the cover painted with an upturned basket of flowers on a ledge resting on a gilt-fringed purple cloth, the front with an ormolu double-headed Prussian eagle escutcheon (the casket extensively broken and repaired, minor restoration to neck of one canister, one canister cover repaired), blue shield marks to each piece, various painter's marks
