Lot Essay

Lieutenant-Colonel Ralph Ouseley, a Captain of the 63rd Foot, served with the Portuguese Army from November 1809 to September 1813. He was severely wounded 'in the operations of the Army' on 31.8.1813, while serving as a Lieutenant-Colonel with the 8th Portuguese Line Regiment (London Gazette refers), and on 25.11.1813 he received the rank of Brevet Major. Ouseley was awarded the British Army Gold Medal for the Pyrenees, as a Major of the Portuguese 18th Line Regiment, and a pension of £300 per annum, commencing on 1.9.1814 'for wounds' received in the Pyrenees.
