A MONUMENTAL ICON OF CHRIST KING OF KINGS AND GREAT HIERARCH

CRETAN, LATE 17TH CENTURY

The Saviour seated upon an elaborate gilt throne, majestically vested as Great Hierarch, with Imperial mitre with pendant jewels and pearls, stole and episcopal omophorion, his feet resting upon a winged seraphim, flanked at the base with the symbols of the four Evangelists, the panel reduced on either side

Lot Essay

The icon follows models produced by the painter Victor, on the island of Zante and on the Peloponnese (see M.Chatzidakis, "La peinture des Maddoneri ou Veneto-cretoise et sa destination", in Venezia Centro di Mediazione tra Oriente e Occidente (Secoli XV-XVII). Aspetti e problemi. Atti del II Convegno Internazionale di Storia della Civilita Veneziana, Florence, 1973, p.680, fig.44) The iconography combines elements from the 14th Century icon of Christ in Majesty in the Hellenic Institute Venice, and an icon of Christ Great Hierarch by Michael Damaskinos, (1530-c.1591) on Corfu.
