(1870-1918), entered the Royal Artillery as a Second Lieutenant 1890; Lieutenant 1893; served during the operations in Merkan, 1898, and was present at the action of Gok Parosh (Mentioned in Lt. Col. Main's Despatch, London Gazette 15.7.1898 "... I would give especial mention to Lieutenant Paine and Jemadar Shaikh Khada Baksh of No. 4 (Hazara) Mountain Battery ... the perfect drill, steadiness and discipline of the battery was admirable", and D.S.O., London Gazette, 4.10.1898, "In recognition of services during the recent operations in Merkan"); Captain 1899; Major 1910; served in the Great War with 26th Battery, Native Mountain Artillery, in India, and later in France; Lieutenant Colonel Paine was killed in action near Albert, 25.7.1918
