Lot Essay

This design was first published in the Thonet range in 1865, advertised in Illustriertes Familien-Journal, 1865. It was included in the first Thonet catalogue of 1866, and remained in production well into the 20th century.
Ostergard, (op. cit.), suggests that Michael Thonet may well have been influenced by the Winfield rocking chair (see previous lot), first produced circa 1851. Both designs were amongst the earliest rocking chairs to integrate the leg and runner elements into a single component.
