INDENTDistinguished Service Medal, London Gazette 25.10.16.

H.M.S.Redbreast was employed as Fleet Messenger in the Mediterranean 1915-1917 and was fitted out for "Q" Ship duties between May and September 1916. On 16 July Redbreast, flying the Greek ensign, sighted an enemy submarine while steering for the Cerigo Channel on the Messines-Alexandria route. Seven projectiles were shot, three of them hitting the submarine, blowing off the conning tower's top and killing the Captain. For this action Lieutenant Brown was awarded the D.S.C., and two of the crew including John Duncan, received the D.S.M. (Seas of Adventure - Keble Chatterton, refers)

The Mediterranean Fleet Messenger Redbreast was sunk by UC.38 in 1917.
