The sitter was the youngest son of Dr. John Craigie (d. 1795). He entered the service of the East India Company and at the time of this portrait was a Captain in that company. He later became a Lieutenant Colonel in the Bengal Native Infantry, retiring in 1830. He died, having returned to England, in 1874. An entry in the artist's journal for 20 Dec 1823 records the picture as having been begun for an agreed price of 30 guineas. The journal also records a portrait in watercolour of Craigie's son as having been begun on 24 December 1823 for an agreed price of 10 guineas. Both pictures are recorded as having been delivered to Captain Craigie on 7 January 1824.
