Lot Essay

There was a group of tsuba makers who made large quantities of tsuba in Tosa during the late Edo period, that are generally known as Tosa Myochin. The production was similar to that of Akasaka, Hayashi and Nishigaki of Higo and Kyoto or Owari sukashi. However, they differ from the neighbouring provinces of Iyo and Awa. The peak period was probably from the Bunka/Bunsei period (1804-1830) to the Kaei Anei period (1848-1860) and many among them were helmet makers. This example is in the Akasaka style.
Geese are thought to be holy birds flying from the everlasting land.
