Lot Essay

Rooke painted many Old Testament subjects, but this one perhaps relates to the mosaic of The Earthly Paradise which was designed by Burne-Jones for the apse of the American Church in Rome and completed by Rooke, his principal assistant, after Burne-Jones's death in 1898. The figures on the left of the mosaic, which was unveiled in December 1907, are comparable to those in our panel; see Richard Dorment, 'Burne-Jones's Roman Mosaics', Burlington Magazine, 120, February 1978, pp.73-82, especially figs.20 and 30.
