1924 285cc MODEL B NER-A-CAR

Registration No. ALA 379A
Frame No.14090
Engine No. 5172

Invented by an American called Carl A. Nearacher in the early 1920s, the Ner-a-Car was manufactured under licence by Sheffield Simplex in the UK from 1922. It was really quite a remarkable design with many interesting features such as having no gearbox, (instead using a variable friction gear), and having a pressed steel chassis and rod steering. Although some referred to the Ner-a-Car as "the motorised mudguard" it did offer lots of protection from the mud and dirt. Whilst not sold as direct competition to the motorcylcle, they found a rather up market niche and it was quite common to find titled ladies and vicars riding Ner-a-Cars. This example is unrestored and the engine turns, it is missing the seat and an engine cowl, but comes with a headlamp.
