The 420 was introduced in 1967 and like the S-type, it benefitted from the independent rear suspension first fitted to the E-type, but with the enlarged 4.2-litre engine. (six cylinder, twin overhead camshaft, 245bhp at 5,500rpm). The 420 sedan is identified by the quadruple hooded headlights and the grill shape from the Mark X and a similar body shape to the S-type. Like all Jaguars it was very well received by the motoring press and the restyled front end greatly boosted sales especially in the export markets. In comparison to the Mark X the 420 is a much more elegant vehicle and not so bulbous in appearance. Being an interim model the 420 finished production in 1968 when the XJ6 arrived.
This car has been in the ownership of a Jaguar enthusiast for the past 17 years. It is fitted with the factory options of chrome wire wheels and a sliding sunroof. Some 15,000 miles ago the engine was rebuilt, rebored, the crank ground and given new bearings. At the same time the front and rear suspension was rebuilt. In the early 1980s attention was paid to the bodywork and the car was re-painted. It is the manual version with overdrive and well worth inspection.
