COOKE, Captain Edward. A Voyage to the South Sea, and round the World... in the Years 1708, 1709, 1710, and 1711... Wherein an account is given of Mr. Alexander Selkirk . London: 1712.

2 volumes, 8° (192 x 116mm). 3 folding letterpress tables, 27 engraved plates, charts and maps, 6 folding, numerous woodcut illustrations. (One folding plate shaved with loss, F4-6 stuck together at inner margins and subsequently crudely opened with resultant tears and some loss to text.) Modern calf.

Second edition of vol.I, FIRST EDITION of vol.II. The correct plate count appears to be 26, the H. Moll 'A Map of Terra Firma' is probably not required. Alexander Selkirk and his years as a castaway on Juan Fernandez Island are generally accepted as Defoe's models for Robinson Crusoe and his adventures. The first edition of the first volume appeared earlier in the same year without 'In two Volumes' on the title. Hill p.64; cf. Sabin 16303 (incorrect plate count). (2)
