Provenance
John Linnell; Christie's, 15 March 1918, probably part of lot 189, 'FIFTY SETS, print state, on India paper, unbound' (330 guineas to M[artin], the auctioneer's catalogue then supplemented in another hand in pencil with the name of R. Ross) as opposed to lot 188, 'TWELVE SETS, SIMILAR, unbound' (138 guineas to Edwards) which contained 'proof' sets similar to those described in lots 182-7.
Mr and Mrs Frank Rinder. A fragmentary type-written note attached to the front of the portfolio reads 'unbound complete sets of Blake's engravings of his Book of Job drawings, India proofs (sic), purchased from the Linnell sale March 15, 1918, are still in the possession of Mr and Mrs Frank Rinder'. A later manuscript note by Mrs Rinder, dated Jan. 16, 1952 reads 'This is only set remaining. Others given away to Blake enthusiasts. These kept to be loaned for exhibition if wanted'.
