Lot Essay

Compare the huanghuali table of this form, but waistless, sold in these rooms, 18 September 1997, lot 17. A table of similar style and proportions is illustrated by R. H. Ellsworth, Chinese Furniture, New York, 1971, pl. 66. The term banzhuo or 'half-table' is typically given to tables of this type without long surfaces; often they would be placed beside longer tables to create a larger top for eating or working.
