MEXICO -- S. Bernardo en Nueva Vizcaya, 176[5]
Manuscript plan of the village of San Bernardo in Nueva Vizcaya, now the state of Durango in northern Mexico, in Spanish, brown ink and green, red and blue washes on paper, (21.7 x 32cm.), showing the village's buildings in elevation, each numbered with their land and fenced boundaries, with the corresponding key running around the edge of the ruled border (edges restored, with loss to two corners, two small wormholes). Inscribed on verso in a contemporary hand, 'San Bernardino en Nueva Vizcaya/N' 20/Ano de 176[5].'

Nueva Vizcaya, an area which came to include most of the modern states of Chihuahua and Durango, was the first province of northern Mexico to be explored and settled by the Spanish. During the 17th and 18th centuries this area became the centre from which missions and expeditions departed to colonise New Mexico.
