Further details
In their first season after their formation in 1888, Celtic were defeated by Third Lanark 2-1 in the replay of the 1888-89 Scottish Cup final played on 9th February 1889 before 16,000 spectators at Second Hampden. The first match, played on 2nd February 1889 ended in a 3-0 win for Third Lanark. However, prior to the first match taking place, both teams had decided that the final would be played as a friendly because of the snowstorm which had made the pitch unplayable. The crowd of 17,000 spectators who attended the first match were unaware of the decision to play the match on a friendly basis and were somewhat mystifyed when the players on either side 'warmed up' by having a snowball fight between them
