GOULD, John (1804-1881). [Icones Avium, or figures and descriptions of new and interesting species of birds from various parts of the world. London: Richard and John E. Taylor, 1837-1838.]
2 parts (all published) in 1 volume, large 2° (550 x 366mm). 18 leaves of descriptive text. 18 FINE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES, one folding, by John and Elizabeth Gould, printed by Charles Hullmandel. (Occasional very slight spotting to some text leaves and the versos of a few plates.) Contemporary green half morocco gilt (very slight scuffing to extremities).
FIRST EDITION, AND A FINE COPY OF ONE OF THE RAREST OF GOULD'S WORKS. He intended this to be an ongoing publication: a platform from which previously undescribed species from all bird families could be periodically presented to the public. The Goulds' Australian researches interrupted the series after just two parts, and the work was never resumed. The first part includes representatives of various bird families: Toucan, Guinea-fowl, Quail; the second part is given over exclusively to Night-jars and Goat-suckers. Ayer/Zimmer pp.254-255; Anker 172; Fine Bird Books p.78; McGill/Wood p.364; Nissen IVB 375; Sauer 7.
