REDOUTE, Pierre Joseph (1759-1840) and Augustin Pyramus de CANDOLLE (1778-1841). Plantarum succulentarum Historia, ou Histoire naturelle des Plantes grasses, avec figures dessinées par P.J. Redouté. Paris: Didot l'Ainé, 1799-[1804].
2 volumes in 1, 2° (332 x 250mm). 121 stipple-engraved plates only (including bis plate 68 misbound), by Redouté, all printed in colours and finished by hand. (Lacks text to plate 68, some leaves very lightly browned, some dust soiling mainly to upper margin.) Contemporary French olive straight-grained morocco, covers blocked in gilt and blind, spine lavishly gilt in compartments (rubbed at extremities), g.e. Provenance: M. Russell (signature on title of vol.I).
"The bibliographical history is indeed complex. No two copies are alike in the number of plates, pages and indexes present, and we know of at least 10 different title pages...from time to time in this period various sets were put on the market...with new title pages and indexes," (Stafleu in Hunt Redoutéana, p.16). These two volumes have 121 plates as called for in the lists of plates; the work in it's most complete form was issued in 28 parts containing 159 unnumbered plates, with a continuation in smaller format bringing the total to 185 (Pritzel 1463). This copy contains 2 printed titles, description to each plate and list of plates to each volume, with Redouté being responsible for the hand-colouring of the plates. Nissen BBI 321 (calling for 182-188 plates); Great Flower Books p.85 (calling for 182 plates); Dunthorne 241.
