4 volumes: 2 vols. text, 8° (215 x 135mm); 2 vols. plates, 2° (670 x 540mm). 2 engraved titles with hand-coloured vignettes (both creased, vol.II torn and repaired), 4 uncoloured plates and 218 FINE HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES. (First 21 plates in vol.II with small unobtrusive tears to lower inner blank margins, plates 76, 82 and 87* shaved into the plate area but not affecting the image.) Contemporary morocco gilt, g.e., by White of Pall Mall (some slight discolouration, extremities of plate vols. slightly rubbed, two endpapers torn and repaired). Provenance: F. D. P. Astley (insciptions in text vols., dated 1849).
A fine copy of Bohn's reprint, published eight years after the completion of the first edition. Audubon's influence as Selby's teacher is much in evidence in the magnificent life-size plates. Zimmer 571; Fine Bird Books 107; McGill/Wood 561; Nissen IVB 853. (4)
