BULKELEY, John & John CUMMINS. A Voyage to the South Seas, In the Years 1740-1. Containing A faithful Narrative of the Loss of his Majesty's Ship the the [sic.] Wager. Philadelphia: James Chatinn for the Author, 1757.
8° (182 x 110mm). 2pp. dedication by Bulkeley to William Denny, Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, 17pp. subscribers' list. (Browned, neat repairs to blank margins of title, following seven leaves and last two leaves.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, modern free endpapers).
'Second edition'. A reprint of the London edition of 1752 (which itself was preceded by an anonymous edition published in London in 1743). The work concerns the privations suffered by the crew of the Wager, one of the squadron that sailed with Anson on his circumnavigation of the world. This edition was enlarged to include much material not in the earlier editions, including the testimony of Isaac Morris. The subscribers' list of over 1200 colonials is also of interest, although it does seem to include a great many of the printer's and the author's family. Sabin 9109.
