CHINESE DRAWINGS -- A collection of drawings of deities and legendary figures. China: circa 1800.]
Broadsheets (355 x 295mm). An album of 66 WATERCOLOUR AND BODYCOLOUR DRAWINGS, most figures heightened with gold or silver, all captioned in Chinese and numbered in Arabic 1-70, the majority with loosely inserted caption slips in Spanish. (Lacking numbers 60, 64, 68 and 69, a few plates shaved at outer or lower margin, some with extremely light finger soiling.) Contemporary deerskin (upper hinge split, some drawings detached).
A FINE ALBUM, IN BRIGHT CONDITION, which is unusually wide-ranging in subject. Although most of the figures represented come from Chinese and Buddhist mythology, Japanese and Taoist deities and legendary characters are also represented. The captions were probably inserted by a Spaniard in the Jesuit order.
