FORTIFICATIONS -- A collection of battle-plans, profiles and technical drawings of fortifications and siege weaponry. France: circa 1780.
Broadsheets (484 x 333mm). 16 LARGE FOLDING WATERCOLOUR DRAWINGS OF FORTIFICATIONS, including three pages illustrating siege weaponry, numbered A-C, the remaining drawings numbered I-XIII, all within black pen and ink borders, on thick paper, watermarks C & H Honig (average sheet size 484 x 700mm.), all but the last two drawings pasted to manuscript page of 'Légende', the last two being attached to blank sheets. (Feuille A with clean tear at edge where pasted to 'Légende', feuille X with similar tear very skilfully repaired, tiny marginal tears to VIII and X.) Near-contemporary half calf (joints split, rubbed).
A detailed and finely-executed set of technical drawings showing siege-towers, battering rams (here actually shown with iron ram's heads at the battering ends) catapults, ditches and barricades. Four of the plans show the prescribed disposition of troops and weapons for attacking forts.
