Lot Essay

Painted in Brittany in 1911 at a time when Carr "painted small canvasses of the countryside and village scenes - farmyards, the canal at Crécy-en-Brie, the old church at St. Efflam, cottage interiors - simplifying and flattening, eliminating detail, creating form out of brush strokes of colour." D. Shadbolt, The Art of Emily Carr, Toronto, 1979, pp. 34-6
