12o (138 x 80 mm). Title-page border of typographical ornaments, Isaak Walton's Life of George Herbert (60-pages, probably from the 1674 edn.) inserted after preliminary leaves. (Small repairs to blank corners of first 3 leaves of The Temple and first 10 leaves of Walton's Life, some headlines slightly shaved by binder as is often the case with this book, inner margin of last leaf I2 renewed along gutter.) Dark blue morocco, gilt-panelled, spine richly gilt, gilt turn-ins, edges gilt, by Bedford (front cover detached.) Provenance: George Milnes Gaskell (armorial bookplate) -- E. Hubert Litchfield (bookplate) sold Parke-Bernet, New York, 3 December 1951, lot 495 -- purchased from John F. Fleming, New York, 15 March 1976.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE TITLE-PAGE, of Herbert's poetical works, edited posthumously by his friend Nicholas Ferrar, who was instructed by the poet on his deathbed to either burn or publish the manuscript "for I and it are less than the least of God's mercies." The collection was an instant success, went through at least 11 editions up to 1695, and established Herbert as one of the foremost religious poets in the English language.
