The International Museum Of Cartoon Art
The museum was founded by Mort Walker, creator of Beetle Bailey, in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1974. It was relocated in 1977 to Rye Brook, New York. In 1993, the museum was renamed the International Museum of Cartoon Art and now has a new home in Boca Raton, Florida. It opened temporary first floor galleries to the public in March of 1996, completing the first phase of the $15 million project and is currently seeking the balance of funds needed to create major permanent galleries on the second floor and restore the first floor to its original intended use as the site of the theater, Cartoon Hall of Fame, Cartoon studio, classrooms and temporary exhibition galleries.
The museum is the only cultural institution of its kind in the world. Its mission is to promote the general and scholarly understanding of this universal and timeless art form. It accomplishes its goals through the collection, preservation and exhibition of an international collection of original works of cartoon art. Funds are being raised by individuals, corporations and national sources. Christie's is proud to be the first major auction house to participate in this pursuit. The following items were donated expressly for fund raising by the original artists or patrons.
