A Mahdist military jibba
the cotton ground applied with patches of red and blue cotton and with gores of navy blue and khaki wool facecloth, with a shaped embroidered breast pocket and side panels of navy wool faceloth, probably for an amir in the Mahdist army, Sudan, circa 1890's, (losses to both cuffs, worn)

Lot Essay

This jibba was preserved with the uniforms of Major Sir Charles Evelyn Pym Kt CBE OL of the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers and is accompanied by a leather luggage tag stamped with his name. His involvement, if any, in the 2nd Sudan War has not been established.
