Lot Essay

David McClure was born in Lochwinnoch. He studied and later taught at the Edinburgh College of Art and at Dundee. A travelling scholarship to Spain and Italy which he had won at the E.C.A. in 1952-53 inspired his early landscapes, however from the 1960s he began to concentrate on painting interiors and particularly still lifes and nudes. He was a vibrant colourist, showing the influence of the French Fauves in particular in the body of his later work, as well as his close association with the painter, Anne Redpath.
