A FINE LIMESTONE BUDDHIST VOTIVE STELE
TANG DYNASTY, 8TH/9TH CENTURY
The stele of ogee arch form, finely carved in high relief on one side with a central figure of Buddha, seated in dhyanasana with one hand gesture in varada mudra, the garment cascading over the raised rectangular plinth, accompanied on either side by a Bodhisattva standing on a lotus base, each with a nimbus emanating from behind the head and dressed with loose garments forming U-shaped folds on the protruding belly, the reverse side carved in shallow relief with a standing Buddha, flanked by a Bodhisattva on either side, traces of red and green pigments remaining on one side
