GARRY BIRTLES Garry Birtles was born in Nottingham on 27th July 1956 and played for local side's Long Eaton Rovers and Long Eaton United before joining Nottingham Forest in March 1977 for (2,000. He helped Forest to their European Cup win's in 1979 and 1980 and appeared for the club in the two Football League Cup final's the same seasons. He made three International appearances for England in 1980 before being transferred to Manchester United in October of that year for (1.2m.. In September 1982 he rejoined Forest for (250,000 and thereafter joined Notts County in June 1987. Birtles was also an England 'B' Internationalist and made two under-21 appearances for his country. Nottingham Forest F.C. won the European Cup for the first time in season 1978-79 by defeating Malmo 1-0 at the Olympiastadion, Munich, on 30th May 1979 before 57,000 spectators, Trevor Francis scoring the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time. On their way to this historic win Forest defeated Liverpool (the European Cup holders) 2-0 on aggregate; AEK Athens 7-2 on aggregate; Grasshoper-Club 5-2 on aggregate and in the semi-final I.F.C. Koln 4-3 on aggregate.
