George Jobey was born at Heddon-on-the Wall, near Newcastle in July 1885 and he joined Newcastle United from Morpeth Harriers in May 1906 for the princely sum of (10. During his stay with Newcastle he made 47 League appearances, scoring two goals and six F.A. Cup appearances, before being transferred to Woolwich Arsenal in May 1913 for the more significant sum of (500. His only major honour with Newcastle was the Championship win of 1908-09, however he did appear in the losing side in the F.A. Cup final of 1910-11. After leaving Woolwich Arsenal he played for several clubs including Hamilton Academical's as a war-time guest player, before becoming involved as a manager with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1922. He joined Derby County in the same capacity in August 1925 and enjoyed a reasonably successful time with County before being suspended for life by the F.A. in 1941 after an enquiry found him guilty of making illegal bonus payments and signing-on fees to several of his signings. The lifetime suspension was subsequently lifted and in January 1952 he became Mansfield Town manager and stayed in this capacity until May 1953. Jobey died at Chaddesden, Derby on 9th March 1962.
