Lot Essay

As René Gaffé wrote about the present work:

He [Max Ernst] excels in retracing the magic of childhood, the pathetic adventures, the voyages to far away countries, creating fabulous characters surrounded by political elements, which from one change of surrounding to the other, show us the unusual aspect of certain situations, such as the painting Vive la France painted in 1923, which I've owned since the time the painter was unknown. (R. Gaffé, op. cit., 1963, p. 107)

In a letter to René Gaffé dated 23 June 1936, Max Ernst wrote (fig. 1):

Max Ernst
.

Could you do me a favor, and send a good picture of Vive la France to Mr. Herbert Read, 3 the Mall Parkhill-Road, London NW3, very soon. I don't have a picture of this painting, and it seems to me quite important that it becomes a little better known. It should be reproduced in a book regarding surrealism, due for release in London very soon. And would you also send me one or two proofs to my Paris address (26, rue des Plantes, Paris 14e). Thank you and pardon me for the inconvenience.

Did Barr write you about this same painting? He would like to include it in the exposition 'Wonders through the Ages' that he is preparing for the Museum of Modern Art. I would be very happy if you would agree to loan this painting... With my best regards. Max Ernst.
